Joaquín is a poet, spoken word artist and award-winning teacher. Born and raised in the barrio of East Dallas, his work captures the duality of the Chicano culture and depicts the essence of barrio life, writing about a youth existing somewhere between the streets and the dream wanderings of a boy who found refuge in a world of stories and poems. For seven years, he has taught literature and creative writing in a high school setting that inspired a new collection of poems from the classroom entitled Stand & Be Heard.
